An octopus can change its color in less than a second. 🐙

And get this. Scientists think octopuses are color blind. They match the colors around them without seeing color the way we do.

One scientist got so surprised by a hiding octopus that he screamed. Can your kids spot it before it moves?

This week, your kids pick the colors. And the Rainbow Fish learns that the shiniest scales in the ocean are not the best thing about him.

Worksheet of the Week ✏️

Coloring builds the small hand muscles that kids use later to write. It also keeps them busy long enough for you to drink your coffee while it’s still warm. 🐳🦀🐙

Try this: Ask your kids to color one animal the “wrong” color on purpose. Then ask them why. A pink shark needs a good story. 🦈💗

Story time 📖

The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister

The Rainbow Fish has the most beautiful scales in the whole ocean. He does not want to share even one. Then he finds out that shiny scales cannot make friends for him. 🌈🐟

The pages have shiny foil, so kids love to tilt the book and watch the scales sparkle. The message about sharing lands better than a hundred “please share with your brother” talks. (We tried.)

Ask after reading: “If you had one special shiny scale, who would you give it to? Why?”

Watch & Wonder 🔬

When something is funny, we show our teeth, we breathe in a strange way, and sometimes we cry. That is a very weird thing to do when you think about it!

This video looks at what scientists think about why people laugh. You can also hear some animal sounds that scientists study. It is made for older viewers, so watch together and pause to explain.

Word of the week 💭

Camouflage (say it: CAM-uh-flahzh)

Camouflage is when the colors or patterns on an animal help it hide. The animal looks like the things around it.

“The octopus used camouflage to look like a rock.”

Challenge: Pick one small toy. Hide it in a spot that is the same color as the toy. Can a grown-up find it in 1 minute? ⏱️

Your corner 🌸

🪼 Watch jellyfish float for 2 minutes. It features relaxing aquarium music for sleep and stress relief. No goals. No talking. Let your shoulders drop.

🧘 10 minutes for your neck and shoulders. This is for the shoulder that carries a sleepy kid, a diaper bag, and three art projects at the same time.

Answer 🤔

Because they live in schools! 🐟🏫

One last thing…✨

You colored one fish. You read one book. You laughed at one tickle.

That is learning. Small moments count, and you had a lot of them this week. And if the shark is purple now? That is camouflage for a very fancy ocean. 🦈💜
