Hi there! 👋

Ask your kid this at breakfast: what if the ocean were as clear as a glass of water? 🌊 Submarines could not hide. Fish could not hide either. Great news for sharks. Bad news for fish.

Here is the wild part. Some sea animals are already see-through, like the glass octopus. Now picture 10 fish swimming by. A shark gulps 3. How many are left? Congrats, your kid did subtraction. Over cereal.

Worksheet of the Week ✏️

Start with some. Take some away. Count what is left. That is the whole trick, and this worksheet helps it stick. ✨

Tip: Give them 10 small snacks to use as counters. If a counter gets eaten, that is also subtraction. 🍪

Story Time 📖

This Book Is Perfect! by Ron Keres, illustrated by Arthur Lin

Finn is not like most frogs. Finn likes things clean. Very clean. His book is spotless. It is PERFECT. (Well, he thinks so.)

Then an oopy, goopy mess sneaks onto his pages. 😱 Finn tries everything to fix it. But some messes cannot be fixed. And some messes should not be fixed.

Ask after reading: “Was the mess bad or good in the end? Why?”

Trivia 🤔

How many hearts does an octopus have? 🐙

Burn Some Energy 🏃

Time to subtract some wiggles.

In Subtraction Action, Jack Hartmann sings simple take-away problems, and kids move while they solve them. Math and a workout. Two jobs, one song.

Bonus challenge: Frog Jump Countdown 🐸
Do 10 frog jumps. Next round, take one away: 9 jumps. Then 8. Keep going down to 0. Round 0 is lying flat on the floor. Kids love round 0. So do parents.

Word of the Week 💭

Left: It can mean what stays after you take some away.

Example: “I had 5 grapes. I ate 2. Now I have 3 left.”

Challenge: “Left” has a second meaning! Can your kid wave their LEFT hand? 👋 Now hold up 3 fingers on that hand. Fold down 1. How many are left?

Finn the frog falls into a 20-foot well. 🐸 Each day he climbs up 5 feet. Each night he slips back 3 feet.

How many days does it take Finn to get out?

Answer 🤔

3 hearts! Two hearts pump blood to the gills, and third heart pumps blood to the rest of the body.
And here is a bonus: octopus blood is blue. 💙

One last thing…✨

Your kid does not need to master the minus sign today. Sharing cookies, counting what is left on the plate, and knocking down sock pins all count.

Small moments add up. Snacks go down. Learning goes up. 📈
