Happy Friday 🎃
The name, jack-o’-lantern - comes from a glowing light. People saw odd lights over marshy land in Ireland and made up a story about a man named Jack and his lantern. The lights are generally thought to come from gas released by rotting plants.
Want to see more? Your kids can watch this National Geographic Kids video together with you.
Then pick up a pencil. Then meet a lady who is not afraid of anything. Well, almost anything.
Worksheet of the Week ✏️
This week’s pack is called Halloween Bunch. It has lots of games in one place:

Kids practice looking closely, finding patterns, solving problems and spotting words. They also get to sit still for a few minutes. That is a win.
Trivia 🤔
Why did the skeleton stay home from the party?

Story time 📖
This week’s book is The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything.
One autumn night, a little old lady walks in the woods. Then she hears clomp, clomp, shake, shake, clap, clap. It scares her badly.

The Horn Book calls it “a splendiferous Halloween story.” School Library Journal gave it a starred review. It has bouncy, repeating lines, so it is great to read out loud.
Ask after reading: “Which sound was your favorite: clomp, shake or clap? Can you make it?”
Watch & Wonder 🔬
Blippi and Meekah go trick-or-treating. At one house, they meet a mysterious Halloween King. He has slimy tricks instead of candy. They must finish three tricky challenges to get the candy back before Halloween night ends.
Try this: Make up three tricky challenges for your family. Hop on one foot. Say “red leather, yellow leather” 3 times fast. Build a tower of 5 blocks. Which one is the hardest?

Have you ever done this to your kid? 👆
Word of the week 💭

Spooky means a little bit scary, but in a fun way.
Example: The old house had a spooky, squeaky door.
Challenge: Make a spooky sound. Can your family guess what makes it? A creaky door counts.
Self-Care is not selfish 💛
The Canadian Red Cross says moms often skip self-care to focus on their kids. It also says that when moms take care of themselves, they show their kids how to be healthy too.
Try one thing this weekend. Take a 10-minute walk alone. Drink a hot cup of tea while it is still hot. Let the kids watch one show while you sit.
Mom Brain Check 🧠
Moms often carry the “mental load.” That is all the planning, remembering and organizing that keeps a family running. An expert says the load often falls more on mothers, and it can lead to burnout and frayed patience.
Here is one small step, write down all the family tasks, including the invisible planning ones. Then pick the start or end of the day to sort them out together.
Your corner 🌸
💪 Workout: A list of 10-minute workouts for busy moms. Most need no equipment. Pick one.
🧘 Stretch: Yoga for Neck, Shoulders and Upper Back (10 minutes) with Yoga With Adriene. Carrying kids and bags can make your shoulders tight.
Answer 🤔

He had no body to go with! 💀
One last thing…✨
Small moments of learning count, even the messy ones. And if your kid is still scared of the dark, that is fine.
