Worksheet of the Week✏️

Sight words. The small words that do not follow the rules - the, said, was, come, they. Your child cannot sound them out. They have to know them by sight.

So we made 50+ pages of tracing practice. One word per page. Trace it, write it, find it, use it in a sentence. Ten minutes a day is enough. That is the whole trick.

Story Time📖

It is the first day of school, and Backpack Bear is so nervous that he hides. The children find him. They tell him he can sit with them.

Then the day begins, and Backpack Bear gets almost everything wrong. He shouts his name out of turn. He walks away from his paints. He wants the computer mouse the whole time.

His teacher does not scold him. She says one line that every parent can borrow: making mistakes is part of learning. By the end of the book, Backpack Bear says it back to his own friends.

This Weekend 🌤️

Three things to do that need no screen and almost no prep.

  • The kitchen scavenger hunt. Write five sight words from this week's pack on paper slips. Hide them around one room. Your child reads each word out loud to keep it. Ten minutes, and the practice does not feel like practice.

  • Leaf rubbings. Collect leaves on a walk. Put paper on top. Rub with the side of a crayon. Then talk about the shapes and the veins.

  • Cook one thing together. Let your child read the recipe steps. Real reading, with a snack at the end.

Your Corner🌸

  1. The screen-free argument, done well (pairs with your weekend section)
An Aeon essay on why children learn more from the real world than from a screen. Free, no sign-up. It is a proper read, not a listicle. [Read here]

  2. Free ten-minute meditations
Ten Percent Happier keeps a free page. There is one for parents, one for anger, and one called Zen Dishwashing that is better than it sounds. [Meditate here]

Answer is…

It had too many problems. 📕

That's it for the week!

Go vote, then go find some leaves. And hunt some sight words on the billboards with your little one!

See you next week,
